Uses
This medicine is
an androgen hormone inhibitor used to treat benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH) which is an enlarged prostate. Your doctor may
prescribe this medicine for other conditions as well.
How to Take This
Medication
Follow the
directions for taking this medicine provided by your doctor or
pharmacist. This medicine should be taken at the same time everyday.
The recommended dose for BPH is 5 mg once daily. This medicine can
be taken with or without food. This medicine may be crushed if
needed to swallow.
Side Effects
This medicine
can cause side effects including: a change is sexual function,
breast enlargement. If you experience other bothersome side effects,
talk to your health care provider.
Precautions
It may take
up
to 6 to 12 months for this medicine to work. Do NOT stop taking this
medicine without first talking to your doctor. Any women who is
pregnant or who may become pregnant should NOT handle crushed or
broken tablets of this medicine. If you are pregnant and have come
in contact with broken tablets, contact your doctor as soon as
possible. Finasteride should NOT be used with children.
Drug Interaction
Before taking
any other medications, either prescription or over-the-counter,
talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Missed Dosage
Take your next
dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose,
skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do
not double doses.
Storage
Keep this
medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out
of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from
excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any
medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
